What is an Adverb of Place?

Adverbs of place tell us where things happened – they change or add meaning to a sentence. They’re also sometimes called spatial adverbs.

ما هو ظرف المكان؟

تخبرنا ظروف المكان بمكان حدوث الأشياء – فهي تتغير أو تضيف معنى إلى الجملة. يُطلق عليهم أحيانًا اسم الظروف المكانية.

What is an adverb of place?

Adverbs that change or qualify the meaning of a sentence by telling us where things happen are defined as adverbs of place.

Some instructors refer to these words or phrases as spatial adverbs. No matter what they are called, these adverbs always answer one important question: Where?

الظروف التي تغير أو تحدد معنى الجملة من خلال إخبارنا بمكان حدوث الأشياء يتم تعريفها على أنها ظروف المكان. يشير بعض المدربين إلى هذه الكلمات أو العبارات على أنها ظروف مكانية. بغض النظر عن اسمها ، فإن هذه الظروف تجيب دائمًا على سؤال واحد مهم: أين؟

Adverb of Place Examples

Adverbs of place can be directional, which means they tell us the direction of something.For example:

أمثلة على ظرف المكان

They can also refer to the distance of something, such as how close or how far away something is.

Adverbs of place can also tell us the position of an object in relation to another object.

يمكن لظروف المكان أيضًا أن تخبرنا عن موضع كائن بالنسبة إلى كائن آخر.

Other adverbs of place show movement in a particular direction. These typically end in the suffix (wards).

تظهر ظروف المكان الأخرى الحركية في اتجاه معين.تنتهي هذه عادةً في  اللاحقة.(wards)

There is a number of adverbs of place which end in the suffix –where.

They express the idea of a location, rather than a specific one.

هناك عدد من ظروف المكان التي تنتهي في اللاحقة –where.

Here and There

‘Here’ and ‘there’ are some of the most common adverbs of place. The give a location that’s relevant to the speaker, rather than another subject or object in the sentence.

‘Here’ means in the same place as the speaker, and ‘there’ means some place away from the speaker.

هنا وهناك

“هنا” و “هناك” هي بعض أكثر ظروف المكان شيوعًا. إعطاء موقع ذي صلة بالمتحدث ، بدلاً من الفاعل أو المفعول به في الجملة.

تعني كلمة “هنا” في نفس مكان المتحدث ، و “هناك” تعني مكانًا ما بعيدًا عن المتحدث.

Here’ and ‘there’ are also combined with prepositions to make adverbial phrases in relation to place.

Adverb Placement

Adverbs are flexible in their placement;

وضع الظرف

الظروف مرنة في وضعها.

therefore, they can be placed just about anywhere within the sentence.

لذلك ، يمكن وضعها في أي مكان داخل الجملة.

At the beginning of a sentence or a clause

في بداية جملة أو فقرة

Clearly, John has a problem arriving to work on time.

Adverbs of place can refer to distances. For example:

Many adverbs of place indicate movement in a particular direction and end in the letters “-ward or –wards”.

For example: 

Toward, forward, backward, westward, eastwards
